At one point, for me, there was something to being an Independent. As a political label, it contained a kind of zeal that spoke to an ideological tradition that stretched back to founding father and first US President George Washington. It spoke to a kind of politics that was transcendental, that saw beyond the pithy, transient self congratulation of contemporary political life in America.
