Opinion: I’m glad I got my 'useless' degree | The Niner Times

When I was in high school, I was convinced that one day I would become the president of the United States. Naively, I figured this meant I had to get a degree in political science, run for local office and work my way up the same as any other politician. I learned very quickly that nobody who actually has political power in America is actually educated in political science.

However, through my undergraduate degree, I have been exposed to an intellectually rich discipline, which has opened a world of possibilities, not because of any guaranteed job opportunities but because it literally opened the possibilities of the world to me. Many would (and have) called my pursuit of political science for its own sake, for the love of the thing, a waste.
