The expansion of the powers of the presidency predates Donald Trump. And it certainly doesn’t belong to conservatives in America alone to grasp at the straws of the President’s authority in order to achieve whatever next goal they have in mind. Rather, Donald Trump is a kind of example of where this exasperated act takes us. To the edges of our sanity, as we cling to some desperate hope that the all-seeing power of the executive is worth the kind of damage it inflicts when we instill in one man the responsibility of arbiter. But, should the next four years pass and an election still stands, it ought to be our primary goal to build a serious movement in favor of neutering the office of president, restoring power back into the hands of the legislature.
