This paper explores the nature of democratic values and imperial democracies through an interrogation of the Athenian example, investigating the contours of democratic value-making and the practice of nationhood in the midst of war. Using Thucydides’ account of the Peloponnesian War, this paper finds gaps in Athenian self-perception and democratic value-making based on the circumstantial situations the nation and its military and political leaders found themselves in over the course of the war.
